Set up MailSprout in the Gmail app on Android

The Gmail app on Android can receive and send MailSprout mail directly. No third-party app needed, no extra fees. The whole setup takes about three minutes.

Last verified: May 27, 2026

Before you start

  • An Android phone or tablet with the Gmail app (version 2020 or later).
  • A MailSprout email account already created (open the dashboard if you haven't).
  • The credentials panel open with the password and server settings visible.
1

Open Gmail and add another account

Open the Gmail app. Tap your profile picture in the top right corner, then tap Add another account at the bottom of the menu.

2

Pick Other and type your email

On the Set up email screen, scroll to the bottom and pick Other (not Google, not Outlook, not Yahoo, not Exchange).

Type your full MailSprout email address (for example, you@yourdomain.com) and tap Next.

3

Pick Personal (IMAP)

Gmail asks What type of account? Pick Personal (IMAP).

Don't pick POP3. POP3 downloads mail and removes it from the server, which means other devices will not see your messages. IMAP keeps mail on the server and stays in sync across every device.
4

Type your password

Paste the password from the credentials panel in your MailSprout dashboard, then tap Next.

5

Enter the incoming server (IMAP)

Gmail shows an Incoming server settings screen. Fill in:

  • Username: your full email address
  • Password: the one you pasted in the previous step (Gmail should keep it filled)
  • Server: fusion.mxrouting.net
  • Port: 993
  • Security type: SSL/TLS

Tap Next.

6

Enter the outgoing server (SMTP)

On the Outgoing server settings screen, fill in:

  • Require sign-in: on
  • Username: your full email address
  • Password: the same one
  • SMTP server: fusion.mxrouting.net
  • Port: 465
  • Security type: SSL/TLS

Tap Next.

7

Finish and send a test

Gmail asks how often to sync (every 15 minutes is fine), whether to send notifications, and whether to sync email automatically. Pick the defaults and tap Next.

On the final screen, type the name you want recipients to see, then tap Next. Send yourself a test message to confirm it works.

Troubleshooting

Gmail says "Couldn't open connection to server" on the IMAP step.
Double-check that the incoming server is fusion.mxrouting.net with no extra spaces, port 993, and Security type set to SSL/TLS. Some Android builds default to STARTTLS, which fails on port 993.
Gmail says authentication failed.
The password is case-sensitive. Tap Show password in Gmail to confirm it matches what the dashboard shows. If the dashboard password is blank (you closed the screen), open the account in MailSprout and regenerate it, then come back.
I want to use the Outlook app on Android instead.
The Outlook mobile app also works. Follow our Outlook setup guide. The values are the same as on desktop.
I see "App passwords" in Gmail somewhere. Do I need one?
No. App passwords are a Google account feature, not a MailSprout one. You sign in to MailSprout with the password from the credentials panel. If you forgot it, regenerate from the MailSprout dashboard.
